Frequently Asked Questions

Plain answers to the questions authors ask most.

Choosing a path

What is the difference between hybrid publishing and publishing services?

In hybrid publishing the author invests in the initial editing and design of the book, and Shhalaj then publishes, distributes and markets it and pays the author a royalty. Publishing services are individual, defined services such as editing, design, typesetting or printing under a service agreement, with no publishing partnership.

Is hybrid publishing the same as being published by a traditional publisher?

No. A traditional publisher chooses the book and pays for its editing, design and printing, and the author pays nothing. In hybrid publishing the author contributes to the initial editing and design under a written agreement, and Shhalaj carries the publishing, distribution and marketing work.

Will Shhalaj publish every manuscript submitted?

No. Every manuscript is reviewed for editorial suitability, publishing alignment and development potential, and submission does not guarantee publication, representation or formal acceptance.

Can I start with a service and move to a publishing partnership later?

Yes. A service such as a manuscript evaluation can be a first step towards a broader partnership. Each stage is documented separately.

Do I need a finished manuscript?

A reasonably complete, carefully reviewed manuscript is best. If you are earlier in the process, a manuscript evaluation or consultation can help you decide the next step.

Cost and agreements

How much does publishing cost?

It depends on the book. A children's picture book and a five-hundred-page research volume do not cost the same to edit and design. We discuss what your manuscript needs before you commit, and the fee is stated in writing in your agreement.

What does the author pay for?

Copy editing, page layout, cover design and a set of author copies for your book. Fees start from ₹20,000; the exact fee depends on your manuscript and is stated in your agreement. It is payable before that work begins. Work outside the agreed scope is charged separately, at rates agreed in writing first.

Is there a fixed package price I can see?

Hybrid publishing fees start from ₹20,000. Because every manuscript is different, we review it first and then give you a written proposal with the exact fee.

Do I keep the copyright in my book?

Yes. The copyright stays with the author at all times. You license exclusive publishing rights to Shhalaj. The agreement sets out which rights, for how long, and how they return to you.

What about author copies?

A set of author copies is included in the publishing fee, and the number is stated in your agreement. You can buy more copies at the author price set out in your agreement.

Distribution and sales

Where will my book be available?

Through the channels that are relevant to your book and covered by your agreement. These may include the Shhalaj bookstore, selected online marketplaces, print and ebook editions and institutional supply. Availability depends on the title, the format and the channel.

Is my book automatically listed on every platform?

No. Listings depend on eligibility, the format of the book and the agreements in place with each channel.

Do you guarantee sales?

No. Distribution creates opportunities for a book to reach readers. Actual sales depend on reader demand, discoverability, pricing, competition, promotional activity and other market factors.

Will my book stay available for ever?

Continued availability and catalogue management are ongoing objectives, subject to contractual rights, channel agreements and commercial feasibility. We do not promise availability in every format indefinitely.

Royalties and rights

Do I earn royalties?

Yes. Under hybrid publishing the author earns a royalty of 5% of the printed price of every copy sold, on print and eBook editions. It is reported once a year, and there is no minimum payout for payments made in India.

Can I see my royalty statements?

Royalty statements are issued through the Author Portal.

Does Shhalaj market the book?

Yes. Shhalaj undertakes marketing, publicity and promotion of the book. The nature and extent are decided by Shhalaj, and promotion is a shared effort in which the author cooperates. Marketing creates opportunities; it does not guarantee sales.

Can I get my rights back?

Either side can terminate for a material breach that is not fixed within 30 days of written notice, and on termination the publishing rights revert to you. The agreement runs for the full term of copyright and has no other termination route, and the fee is not refunded unless agreed in writing or required by law. The details are on our Rights and Royalties page.

The Author Portal

Do I need an account to submit a manuscript?

Yes. You create a free Shhalaj Author Account on the Author Portal, complete your profile and submit through the guided form.

Is there one login for everything?

Yes. One author account covers submission, documents, contracts, production progress and royalty statements, whichever publishing path you are on.
